Overview

Versa Drives’ EV Motor Controller Platform is built for OEMs who need reliable PMSM / BLDC motor controllers and traction drives for light electric vehicles and utility equipment.

Instead of a single fixed product, this platform is a configurable base that supports different vehicle classes, battery voltages and motor technologies. Current applications include EV traction for 2- & 3-wheelers, low-voltage traction for material-handling and cleaning equipment, and on-board hydraulic systems on utility vehicles. Platform Capabilities

The EV Motor Controller Platform is designed as a flexible building block rather than a single model. At a high level, it can support:

Motor technologies
  • PMSM / BLDC traction motors for electric 2- & 3-wheelers and other light EVs
  • 3-phase AC induction motors and PMSM variants for on-board hydraulic power packs and auxiliary drives
DC bus / input supply
  • Controllers are commonly designed for EV and traction battery systems at 24 / 48 / 60 / 72 / 96 V DC
  • The same control and power platform is also used on higher DC bus levels, typically up to around 500 V DC for on-board hydraulic and auxiliary drives derived from the vehicle battery
Power bands we commonly work with
  • Applications ranging from a few hundred watts up to roughly 4 kW for traction and propulsion in light EVs and low-voltage vehicles
  • Hydraulic and pump drives in the approximately 1–5 HP range for vehicle-mounted power packs and auxiliary systems
Control, feedback and algorithms
  • Field-oriented control (FOC) for PMSM / BLDC traction motors to achieve smooth torque, high efficiency and good low-speed behaviour
  • V/f and vector-control options for AC induction motors used in hydraulic and auxiliary applications
  • Feedback options including Hall sensors, resolver and sensorless schemes, chosen according to cost and performance needs
Protection, standards and environment
  • Protection functions such as under / over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit, over-temperature and locked-rotor detection
  • Designs aligned with relevant EV and drive standards, including AIS-004 for EV traction controllers and applicable IEC safety / EMC standards for drives
  • IP-rated enclosures and thermal design suitable for automotive and industrial environments (dust, water, vibration and high humidity)

These bands describe the capability envelope the platform is already engineered for and has been used in past programmes. New EV and mobility projects can be evaluated within or near these ranges, and platform extensions can be discussed where the application requires it.

1) EV controllers for 2 & 3 wheelers

Motor controller family for electric 2- & 3-wheelers using PMSM / BLDC traction motors in the 2–4 kW range, typically at 48–72 V DC. These controllers support high starting torque, configurable drive profiles, automotive I/O (ignition, brake, direction, throttle) and are designed to meet EV requirements such as AIS-004 and relevant EMC standards.

2) Low-voltage traction controllers for material-handling & cleaning

Low-voltage traction controllers for BLDC / PMSM motors in warehouse and cleaning equipment, typically within 24–72 V DC and roughly 0.25–4 kW. These drives provide traction control, brake and contactor outputs, and safety interlocks, and are suitable for vehicles such as pallet-style machines and floor scrubbers / sweepers.

3) On-board hydraulic power pack controllers

Controllers that drive 3-phase AC motors (and PMSM variants) from a 200–500 V DC bus to power hydraulic pumps on utility vehicles. Typical uses include tipper lifting, refuse compaction and aerial work platforms, with IP-rated enclosures, overload capability and interfaces for PLC / vehicle controllers.

We typically follow a simple process to match the platform to your vehicle or equipment:

  • Define the requirement – vehicle or equipment type, battery system, motor choice, gradeability, duty cycle and any safety or regulatory targets.
  • Select the closest platform variant – choose from existing EV traction, low-voltage traction or hydraulic drive building blocks that fit your voltage, power and environment.
  • Customise control & interfaces – adjust firmware (drive profiles, limits, protection thresholds), feedback options and I/O mapping (throttle, brake, interlocks, CAN / PLC) to match your vehicle architecture and control strategy.
  • Validate & scale – support for lab tests, field trials and certification, followed by volume production with agreed change-control and lifecycle support.
